[Varian stares a moment more- he vaguely understands movies exist but not much more beyond that.]
Okay, so I'm from like...the 1820s so you're gonna have to take this a couple steps back for me. Movies are like...plays, right? Like how we can see each other on the network?
[Did Ken really want to talk to him about this? He could but he found himself wondering if he should.]
Because people sometimes want to see something that is made up. I don't know how familiar with superheroes, but it can be fairly nice to see a hero fighting a villain.
[From there, Ken may or may not be mumbling to himself some more as he glanced awkwardly to the ground.]
That definitely was a word there. For a brief moment, Varian feezes, staring off into the middle distance. Those days are far behind him, and he knows that Ken doesn't know about his past. No one does, bar Fern.
...And well, Rapunzel and Cass. Mostly because they were there. But he's sure they wouldn't say anything. Cass...maybe? But no, no. This doesn't seem to be directed at him. He glances Ken's way, chewing his lip, and hugging an arm around himself.]
...I guess so. It's good to see the good guys triumph over the bad ones, huh?
[As much as Ken wanted to say something, he knows he probably shouldn't. He knows that look, he dealt with it himself before. There were secrets that should remain a secret.
There were even some things that Ken knows not to say even when there are trusted adults. Instead, he gave a small smile before tilting his head to the side.]
Yeah, it is and it makes you know that everything will work itself out in the end. Even when things get really bad, there is some kind of hope.
[Varian's very glad that Ken doesn't press the subject. "I tried to murder the royal family and also took over the kingdom that one time" really isn't a fun conversation subject. He manages a small smile back, because he CAN agree with that statement very much.]
Sometimes things can be so bad it doesn't feel like there's any there...but it comes around eventually. Usually when you need it most.
[Neither is talking about he joined an undercover group in order to murder the one who killed his mother out of revenge. Instead, he'll just keep tilting his head hoping to put some distance between him and Varian]
And especially in the most unexpected form. I like to think if you keep hoping, it will turn out okay.
[But there was a hint of doubt in his words but he wouldn't bring it up unless Varian would.]
[That is definitely not a super fun chat, either, no sir. Varian is quiet for a moment.]
Yeah. Sometimes...you have to work towards it? Or sometimes things will be really, really bad before it gets better. But it does get there...eventually. Most of the time.
[He still wouldn't dare look at him in the eyes. He knew he was one the lucky ones. If it weren't for his friends, he really didn't know where he would end up. Still, he gave a sigh before trying to change the subject.]
Anyway, have you seen any of the superhero movies here? I think they might have some merchandise here!
[Varian very much welcomes the subject change. He's not ready to re-open that particular wound again just yet.]
I haven't seen any movies yet. Only the comics in the convention. Merchandise is like...things connected to that movie, right? Like...toys and books and...stuff?
[He's doing his gosh darn best here, this future world is so confusing. ]
Yes, that's correct! There is something like that here so how about we go and look for some? I don't really know what you like but how about you pick something.
[He said as he kept walking around to see what items that he might be familiar with.]
Since you got me something, how about I give you something back?
Well, that's easy, because I don't really know what I like, either. Unless there are good science movies?
[He would LOVE a science movie gosh wow! He is tragically unaware of how unlikely it is to get a movie that is scientifically accurate, but that's a lesson he'll just have to learn. He blinks, surprised at the offer.]
Oh...no, no. It's okay. I didn't do it expecting anything in return.
I don't think monsters count as science unless it's Frankenstein's. But space travel would be cool!
[He does want to learn more about SPACE after all- and he still feels movies would be an educational experience. At Ken's comment, he lets out a soft little noise of understanding. He doesn't really like it- helping people without a reward feels like a...penance. One he needs to carry out, but it wouldn't be any good if it made the other person miserable, too.]
All the more reason why we should get something related to space travel, right?
[For a moment, Ken raised an eyebrow. He wasn't sure if he might have made him mad but all he knew was that he should return the favor, right? That was what he was supposed to do, it seemed fair. Or rather, that's what he was always taught.
That's why he kept on blinking before giving a little mumble.]
It does but we don't have to if you don't want to.
[Varian makes a soft sound in the back of his throat. He knows this would be easier if he just opened up to people about his past here. People would get it then. But he's been enjoying not being known as the guy who made such terrible, awful mistakes here. He's stuck between a rock and a hard place.]
I mean...I'd be fine if we...didn't? It's- it's cool. And all.
[All things considered, Ken was a little surprised. While he knew the value of simply doing work for the sake of it, it was unusual to hear someone to deny something like this.
Despite his silence, he just gave a chuckle.]
That's fine! Although, I suppose I'll have to give you an I.O.U? [Pause] Is that what they call it here in America?
Hah, I'm not sure, but I know they say that where I come from. [Enough that he asked Cass to drop her own. ] So...yeah, okay. We can call it that. That sounds...fair.
[Oh Ken, you sweet summer child. Varian lets out a soft hum.]
Oh, you see it helps with the thinking. Some people believe the blood rushing to your head makes you think of better ideas. More blood, more thoughts, right?
Is that so? I don't really know, I think it would just make you have a headache. But I suppose if it works for the people in your world, I can't really complain?
[Because who knows what goes in in other worlds, right?]

[He said before scratching the side of his face. This was a lot more difficult than he thought.]
And there's a lot more music and action involved? And some computer graphics that makes the scene look more real when they aren't really there too.
no subject
...Why would they make them look real when you can just...be in reality? Where everything is already real?
no subject
Because people sometimes want to see something that is made up. I don't know how familiar with superheroes, but it can be fairly nice to see a hero fighting a villain.

[He said as he continues looking around the various furniture around here. As he glanced at a wooden chair, he raised an eyebrow at Varian.]
Because I don't really know what your world has or doesn't have.
no subject
Well, we definitely have huckledongers. Those are what you sit on upside down, right? To get the blood flowing to your head.
[He is 100% fucking with Ken.]
no subject
But what is the point of having one? It seems like it would be a waste of time when getting all that blood would make you dizzy.
no subject
Oh, you see it helps with the thinking. Some people believe the blood rushing to your head makes you think of better ideas. More blood, more thoughts, right?

I'm messing with you. I know it's a chair. We sit on them like chairs. [He'll sit...to demonstrate.] See? Like normal.
